Language requirements

A good command of the German language is a necessary requirement in order to apply for and enrol in the social sciences programme.
In order to enrol in a degree programme at the University of Düsseldorf, you will need to pass the DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang) ( or have evidence of having passed the TeDaF (, or other recongnised equivalents such as the Goethe Institute's Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung (ZOP), the Kleine or Große Deutsche Sprachdiplom, or level C2 of the European Framework for Reference for Languages.
Please note: It is not possible to directly apply for the DSH without having been accepted to the programme. You will first need to contact the Social Sciences Institute (link contact info) and follow the application procedures outlined in this site. The DSH test usually takes place 3 to 4 weeks prior to the beginning of lectures each semester (in September for the winter semester). For more information on preparing for and taking the DSH, visit the website:
If you have already studied in Germany on a previous occasion and have passed the DSH, you will need to provide your DSH certificate (Zeugnis) along with your application to the registration office (Studierendensekretariat). In addition, you will need to provide evidence that you are no longer enroled at this university in order to be admitted as a student to the University of Düsseldorf. This evidence is provided in the form of an "Exmatrikulationsbescheinigung" from the German university where you previously studied.
