Bureaucratic procedures

Registration at the Housing Registration Office (Anmeldung beim Einwohnermeldeamt)
Once you have moved to Düsseldorf and found a room or apartment, you will need to register at the Einwohnermeldeamt within a week of establishing residence. In Düsseldorf, you can register at any of the Bürgerbüros in Düsseldorf.

  • In order to complete registration, you will need to bring the following:
  • The white registration form (Anmeldeformular), which is available at the Bürgerbüro.
  • A signature from your landlord, or, if you are subletting, the signature from the leaseholder.
  • Your passport

Once completing registration, you will receive an Anmeldebestätigung. Make sure to keep this piece of paper, since you will need it when getting your residence permit and opening a bank account.
Please note: On the registration form, there is a space asking for your religious affiliation (Religionsgesellschaft). Leave this blank, as this is used to determine church taxes.
If you move apartments within Düsseldorf, you will need to re-register by completing the “Ummeldeformular”. You will need to include the signature of your landlord or leaseholder and return this form to one of the Bürgerbüros. You will receive confirmation of your de-registration (Abmeldebestätigung) and will re-register following the instructions above.
When leaving Düsseldorf, make sure to de-register (Abmeldung). Failure to do so will be problematic if you ever decide to establish residence in Germany at any time in the future.
