C09: A frame-based analysis of countability

Funding period : 01.07.2015 - 30.06.2019

Project C09 develops a frame-based theory of countability, focusing on (i) the fine-grained analysis of units of counting and measuring in the semantic representation of nominal expressions, which motivates the count vs. mass distinction, and its extensions to the parallel event vs. process aspectual distinction in the verbal domain, and (ii) shifts of meaning between count and non-countinterpretations. The theoretical point of departure is Type Theory with Records (TTR, Cooper), as it offers an integration of frame semantics with a logic based on lambda abstraction and functional application; C09 will extend it with a fine-grained account of mereological and aspectual properties.
