Radical Life Extension: An Ethical Analysis

One current trend among progressive biogerontologists is to search for methods that enable us to extend the maximum human life span through biotechnological inter-ventions. Since the existence of such technologies would have enormous consequences for the individual and social life of people, it is necessary to ask whether we should develop them or rather refrain from undertaking further research into this direction. Most arguments in the debate over life extension technologies can be recon-structed as welfarist arguments which is why it is reasonable to adopt the ethical theory of welfarism for an analysis of this topic. Problems featured in this debate are, for example, personal identity over time, overpopulation, inter- and intrasocietal justice, and our obligations towards future generations. However, non-welfarist topics like the value of human nature, the relation between aging and the meaning of life, and the medical status of aging also deserve consideration.
