LAS AMÉRICAS

General Information

The interdisciplinary Master of Arts program “The Americas – Las Américas – Les Amériques” has been specially designed to provide masters-level students with intercultural competency and analytical skills in the area of Interamerican Studies.

The vast American hemisphere, extending from Canada, North America and the Caribbean to Central and South America, is characterized by a plurality of geographical and demographic regions. These reflect a broad spectrum of language backgrounds, cultural influences and social conditions. The program at the University of Düsseldorf entails a comprehensive and innovative approach to the languages, literatures and arts of the American regions. Students will gain a thorough understanding of the connections between North, Central, and South America and develop skills in analyzing a variety of historical, literary and cultural contexts. Graduates of the program qualify for professional opportunities in cultural management, journalism, advertising and public relations, as well as in academia, the media and various aspects of international trade. As a hub for services, tourism and the media sector and with its attractive cultural landscape Düsseldorf provides excellent opportunities for professional advancement.

Curriculum

The curriculum especially focuses on cultural, media, and literary studies. The two year program is comprised of 120 credit points. It combines core courses from two major areas, American Studies and Romance Languages, Literatures and Culture. Students are expected to complete credit hours in both fields, while developing an integral command of the methods and techniques pertinent to current cultural and media sciences. The second year of study provides specialization in an area of choice. Courses are held in English and Spanish or French respectively; advanced level training in English and Spanish or French is part of the curriculum. The introductory survey course will be held in German.

_____________________________________

Enrolment for the Master of Arts program is only possible for the winter term of a respective year (lectures begin in October). The application deadline is October 1st

Prospective students should submit a BA certificate (2.5 or better according to the German grading system, equals GPA 3 or better) or an equivalent qualification in a related subject (English or Romance Studies, Cultural- and Media-Studies, Comparative Literature, Creative Writing etc.). Knowledge of English and Spanish or French is a prerequisite; in one of these languages skills on the level B2 are required and in the other competency on the level B1 must be demonstrated (European Framework of Reference for Languages). We will also accept applicants with an A2 level in their ‘weaker’ language on condition that they will advance their skills on their own (it is possible to use the facilities of the university’s language center). In accordance with the core requirements for any Master of Arts program at the Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, international students have to certify a sufficient knowledge of German (e.g. a DSH or TestDaF certificate)

Three months of study or work in an English, French, Spanish or Portuguese speaking country have been integrated into the program’s application profile. This application criterion does not apply to natives from a country in which one of these languages is the official language. In this case, a copy of a valid passport would be sufficient documentation. Additionally, native speakers of English, Spanish, or French can certify their language competency through their highest school diplomas.

The tuition fee at the University of Düsseldorf ranges around 230 Euros per semester. There are no additional enrolment fees.

Please send all applications and documents to the program coordinator
