Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I get to the university and what will be happening then?
We explained that in the Getting there and away section.

  • Why does it take so long until my wire-transfer is confirmed?

  • Especially if you transfered the money to the American account it might take some time until we get the information. Please be assured that we are trying hard to confirm the transfer as quickly as possible. If it does take more than two weeks, please feel free to send us an email!
Another problem that occurs frequently is the following:
When doing the wire-transfers, please make sure that you include the name of the person you are paying for! It happened a number of times that only the name of the sender showed on our bank account which is not necessarily the name of the person who registered for our program. This then leads to a delay in confirmation since we are unable to process transfers by unkown people. Thanks for your help.

  • Is there an official exchange rate for Euro to US$?

  • Yes, there is. The prices should be included everywhere on the webpage. People who have already transfered the fees at the rate on that day do not have to worry about the new fees. Please note that you can choose whether you pay in Euro or US$, no matter where you live. Still, we only accept US$ on the American account, only Euro on the German one.

  • Will sheets and blankets be provided for in the student dorms?

  • Yes, they will. So you don't have to worry about that.

  • How many courses can one take and how many do you recommend?

  • You can theoretically take up to eight courses which would keep you busy from 8:30am til 6:30pm six days a week. Since all courses require some preparation work and there will also be several events in the evenings, we would recommend taking no more than four or five courses. Taking more than this will certainly keep you from appreciating the courses you do take, as well as enjoying the other things that will be going on at the Summer School.

  • How many hours does one course have?

  • Classes will meet three times a week, two hours each. Over the period of three weeks that totals 18hrs. The courses by Mr. Van Valin and by Mr. Muysken are 18hrs. courses as well, even though they occupy two groups each in the time scheme.

  • How do I register?

  • You can find all necessary forms under our registration link. There you will also be asked to choose an account to transfer the registration- and, if selected, accommodation-fee to.

  • How do I register for accommodation?

  • This also is on the registration form. Just check the box you prefer. Remember that registration will only be effective after we have received the fee.

  • How do I contact the Sorat hotels?

  • Please have a look at their website.

  • How do I pay?

  • When filling out the registration form you will be asked whether you want to transfer the money either to a German or an American account. You can also find the account information here. Remember that you might have to pay a wire-transfer fee in addition to the registration fee. Please make sure that the full amount reaches our account.

  • Can I send you a cheque?

  • Sorry, wire transfers only!

  • What language will courses be held in?

  • All courses will be taught in English. Besides, Duesseldorf is quite an international city, so don't worry about your German. Though, if you have the time, you might want to consider participating in one of our language courses.

  • How do I know which courses will take place at the same time?

  • It's all right here. Courses arranged in one slot will take place at the same time, so you can choose only one from each group. You will find the same table in the registration form.

  • Do you have a mailing list with the latest news?

  • Actually, we don't. But we try to keep the website as up-to-date as possible, and most of the time we succeed. So don't forget to drop in from time to time.

  • I am a Ph.D. student, but also do some teaching. Do I have to pay student or faculty fees?

  • We consider as faculty people who earn 800 Euro / 710 US-Dollars per month or more. If you make less than that you are welcome to apply as student.

  • Are there any grants / scholarships available?
Yes, there are. You can find further information here.
