In Brit. J. Phil. Sci 46, Pietroski and Rey ([1995]) have suggested a reconstruction of ceteris paribus (CP)-laws, which ? as they claim ? saves CP-laws from vacuity. This discussion note intends to show, by way of a logical theorem, that Pietroski and Rey?s reconstruction cannot avoid the result that CP-laws are almost vacuous.

The paper presents a foundation of normic laws of the form "if A, then normally B", which is based on generalized evolution theory and explains their omnipresence, lawlikeness and reliability. An argument is presented which shows that the fact that normic laws are a product of Evolution must establish a systematic connection between prototypical and statistical normality.

Normic laws have the form "if A, then normally B". If a philosophical analysis of normic laws is combined with certain developments in nonmonotonic logic, several problems in philosophy of science can be seen in a new perspective which, at least in many cases, allows to improve their received analysis.

This paper embeds default logic into an extension of Adams' probability logic, called the system P+ DP. Default reasoning is furnished with two mechanisms: one generates (ir)relevance assumptions, and the other propagates lower probability bounds. Together both mechanisms make default reasoning probabilistically reliable. There is an exact correspondence between Poole-extensions and P+ DP-extensions.

This paper superimposes an assumption generation mechanism (AGM) and a lower bound propagation mechanism (LBM) on default reasoning. AGM generates minimal probabilistic assumptions which are needed to derive default conclusions safely, and LBM supplies (approximately) tight lower probability bounds of the conclusions. Together both mechanisms make default reasoning probabilistically reliable.

The paper presents an outline of a new theory of relevant deduction which arose from the purpose of solving paradoxes in various fields of analytic philosophy. In distinction to relevance logics, this approach does not replace classical logic by a new one, but distinguishes between relevance and validity. It is argued that irrelevant arguments are, although formally valid, nonsensical and even harmful in practical applications. The basic idea is this: a valid deduction is relevant iff no subformula of the conclusion is replaceable on some of its occurrences by any other formula salva validitate of the deduction. Finally the paper presents an overview of its applications in philosophy of science, ethics, cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence.
