Ph.D. position

(65 %; EG 13 TV-L)

The position, which is starting on 01.01.2016, is initially limited until 31.12.2018. The position belongs to the DFG-project D01 (Frame representation of prototype concepts and prototype-based reasoning, principal investigator: Prof. Gerhard Schurz), which is part of the Collaborative Research Center 991 (The Structure of Representations in Language, Cognition, and Science) at the HHU Düsseldorf.

We are seeking motivated candidates with a Master (M.A. or M.Sc.) and background in Philosophy or/and Psychology of Cognition as well as experiences in design and performance of psychological experiments.

Description of the project

The project is performed within a Ph.D. study. Research work includes:

  • Philosophical background: Theories of meaning of concepts.
  • Major topic: Philosophical and cognitive theories of prototype concepts, focusing on the account of prototype frames and their probabilistic interpretation.
  •  Specialization:  Empirical and conceptual investigation the relation between typicality and probability. Investigation of failures of compositionality of prototype frames and means to restore compositionality.
  • Intended output: PhD and publication in international journal(s).

The salary-group will be EG 13 TV-L provided the required qualifications are met.

The position, which is starting on 01.12.2015 is initially limited until 30.11.2017, we aim at a prolongation. The position belongs to the DFG-project D01 (Frame representation of prototype concepts and prototype-based reasoning, principal investigator: Prof. Gerhard Schurz), which is part of the Collaborative Research Center 991 (The Structure of Representations in Language, Cognition, and Science) at the HHU Düsseldorf. 

We are seeking motivated candidates with a completed Doctorate (in philosophy or psychology) and background in Philosophy or/and Psychology of Cognition as well as experiences in design and performance of psychological experiments.  

Description of the project

Research work includes:

  • Philosophical background: Theories of meaning of concepts.
  • Major topic: Philosophical and cognitive theories of reasoning with prototype concepts, focusing on prototype frames and their probabilistic interpretation. Empirical and conceptual investigation the relation between typicality and probability.
  • Specialization: Investigation of the rules of prototype-based reasoning in terms of inference-strength and risk-avoidance. Empirical study of the question, to which extent and in dependence on which conditions intuitive human reasoning follows the rule of default inheritance (or default monotony).
  • Intended output: Publications in international journals.
