Efforts to represent a new truth or veracity in the visual arts mainly occur parallel to social changes: be it to preserve traditions or to legitimate innovations. These efforts for veracity can be manifested in very different ways: via the introduction of new unknown elements, by the employment of irritating compositions, the recourse on special contexts or the integration of new media-structures.
But the efforts do not only concern the formal structure of an image. New perspectives and reading-habits were often successfully integrated by the recourse on relations between different media such as the visual arts and literature, the press or theological and scientifical discourses.
Although this search can manifest itself as a deeply personal or on the other hand apparently objective truth, the dilemma is obvious. Despite all apparently objective factors, the artistic representation naturally remains subjective and selective (choice of medium, represented frame, represented moment of the narratio etc.).
This congress wants to discuss the different strategies which artists and critics employed to legitimate a new veracity in art. Of particular interest are the reasons for new media-conceptions and their reception.
A publication is planned.
