GENERAL LINGUISTICS

Structure of the undergraduate study programme in linguistics which focuses on foreign languages

The study programme comprises the following four components.

General linguistics

A profound introduction into core linguistic disciplines with a special focus on an interdisciplinary field.

  • an overview of linguistic studies: introductory course to linguistics, with tutorial (Grundkurs Linguistik mit Tutorium)
    Basismodul B4

Alongside studies in all the important linguistic core disciplines.

  • discipline 1 phonetics and phonology (articulation)
  • basic module B1, advanced module  A1a (methodology) and A1b (further studies on the matter)
  • discipline 2 morphology and syntax (grammar)
basic module B2, advanced  module A2a (methodology) and A2b (further studies on the matter)
  • discipline 3 semantics and pragmatics (the meaning and use of words)
basic module B3, advanced module A3a (methodology of formal logic) and A3b (further studies on the matter)

Additionally, you choose one of the following fields as special focus of your studies. All the fields on offer are interdisciplinary, i.e. they relate to different core disciplines.

  • discipline 4 linguistic diversity (differences and commonalities between languages, linguistic diversity); advanced module A4a (course on the structure of a non-Indo-European language)  and A4b (further studies on the matter)
  • discipline 5 psycho- and neurolinguistics (language and cognition)
advanced module A5a (methodology) and A5b (further studies on the matter)
  • discipline 6 computational linguistics (computer-based language processing) advanced module A6a (introduction) and A6b (further studies on the matter)
  • discipline 7 historical linguistics (the historical developement of languages)
advanced module A7a (courses on the history of languages) and A7b (further studies on the matter)
  • discipline 8 linguistic of the major foreign language (English, Französisch, Spanish or Italian)
    advanced modules A8a and A8b

Major foreign language ("Große Fremdsprache")

Students pursue extensive practice in a foreign language which they are either already knowledgeable of or not. Choose from English, French, Italian, Spanish, German (as a foreign language) and Japanese.

  • basic module S1 and advanced module S2 language, in total16 SWS, 2 advanced modules
  • advanced module S3 on the linguistics of the major foreign language

Minor foreign language ("Kleine Fremdsprache")

Students pursue practice in a foreign language of which they are not or not considerably knowledgeable. Thus students usually acquire their third foreign language. Choose from French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Yiddish, Hebrew (modern or Biblical), Latin, Ancient Greek.

  • basic module S4 and S5 language practice, in total 8 SWS, 2 final exams
  • advanced module on the linguistic of the minor foreign language and/ or further language practice

Electives

The electives serve to complement your studies and impart practical knowledge. Pursuant to the regulation on the undergraduate study programme, the electives are comprised of the following courses:

  • courses offered within the framework of Studium Universale at Heinrich-Heine-Universität, preferably courses offered by other faculties. Students should acquire at least 4 CP
  • courses offered by the faculty that serve to impart key skills and to prepare students for professional life.
  • courses contained in study programmes other than the one students are enrolled with (also offered by other faculties)
  • other courses that serve to prepare students for aptitude tests that are required for postgraduate study programmes
