Version "S", which focuses on foreign languages
The version "S" of the undergraduate study programme in linguistics focuses on foreign languages and combines the practice of two foreign languages with thorough studies in general linguistics. As a result, graduates are proficient in these languages and knowledgeable of linguistics.
The major foreign language ("Große Fremdsprache")
The studies in the major foreign language ("Große Fremdsprache") focus on a language that students have already knowledge of (e.g. from school), which will be advanced to a proficient level. Students can choose from English, French, Italian, Spanish, German (as a foreign language) or another language such as Japanese.
The minor foreign language ("Kleine Fremdsprache")
The studies in the minor foreign language ("Kleine Fremdsprache") focus on a foreign language in which students have little knowledge or no knowledge at all. In this way, students usually acquire their third foreign language. They can choose from French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Yiddish, Hebrew, Latin and Ancient Greek. Further language options are being developed. After prior consultation with the department, other languages can also be studied outside Heinrich Heine Universtity.
