Structure of the undergraduate study programme in linguistics, the G version

The undergraduate study programme comprises the following four components.

General linguistics

Students gain profound insights into core linguistic disciplines and focus on an interdisciplinary field.  

An overview of linguistic studies is provided by the introductory course to linguistics with tutorial (Grundkurs Linguistik mit Tutorium Basismodul B4)alongside studies in all the important linguistic core disciplines.

  • discipline 2 morphology and syntax (grammar)basic module B2 , advanced  module A2a (methodology) and A2b (further studies on the matter) Basismodul B2, Aufbaumodule A2a (Methoden) und A2b (thematische Vertiefung)
  • discipline 3 semantics and pragmatics (the meaning and use of words)basic module B3 , advanced module A3a (methodology of formal logic) and A3b (further studies on the matter) Basismodul B3, Aufbaumodule A3a (Methoden: Formale Logik) und A3b (thematische Vertiefung)

Additionally, students choose one of the following fields as special focus of their studies. All the fields on offer are interdisciplinary, i.e. they relate to different core disciplines.

  • discipline 4 linguistic diversity (differences and commonalities between languages, linguistic diversity); advanced module A4a (course on the structure of a non-Indo-European language)  and A4b  (further studies on the matter)
  • discipline 5 psycho- and neurolinguistics (language and cognition)advanced module A5a  (methodology) and A5b  (further studies on the matter) discipline 6 computational linguistics (computer-based language processing) advanced module A6a (introduction) and A6b (further studies on the matter)
  • discipline 7 historical linguistics (the historical developement of languages)advanced module A7a  (courses on the history of languages) and A7b (further studies on the matter)
  • discipline 8 linguistic of the major foreign language (English, Französisch, Spanish or Italian)advanced modules A8a and A8b 

Major foreign language

Students pursue extensive language practice in a foreign language of which they have either advanced knowledge or no prior knowledge at all. Students choose from English, French, Italian, Spanish or German as a foreign language or Japanese.

  • basic module S1 and advanced module S2 (Sprachpraxis), in total 16 SWS, 2 AP
  • advanced module S3 on the linguistics of the major foreign language

Philosophy studies for linguists

Students conclude three modules contained in the undergraduate study programme in philosophy and specifically chosen for students of linguistics.

  • basic module P1:theoretical and practical aspects of debating
  • advanced modules P2 and P3 on language philosophie and cognitive science

Electives

Alongside their linguistic studies, students attend seminars and lectures that appeal to them. Pursuant to the regulation on the study programme, these electives comprise the following courses.  

    • courses offered within the framework of Studium Universale at Heinrich-Heine-Universität, preferably courses offered by other faculties. Students should acquire at least 4 CP
    • courses offered by the faculty that serve to impart key skills and to prepare students for professional life.
    • courses contained in study programmes other than the one students are enrolled in (also offered by other faculties)
    • other courses that serve to prepare students for aptitude tests that are required for postgraduate study programmes
