GENERAL LINGUISTICS

Syllabus of the undergraduate study programme in linguistics which focuses on computational linguistics

The study programme consists of five components:

general linguistics

the introduction into central fields of linguistics:

  • the seminar and tutorial "Grundkurs Linguistik mit Tutorium" provides an overview of linguistic studies

          Basic module B4

introductions to all major linguistics fields:

  • field 1 phonetics and phonology (acoustic and perceptive level):
    basic module B1
  • field 2 morphology and syntax (grammar):
    basic module B2
  • field 3 semantics and pragmatics (meaning and use of words):
    basic module B3

further studies in the central linguistic fields:

  • further studies: A3a formal logic
  • further studies in one of the modules  A1a (methodology of phonetics & phonology) or A2a (methodology of grammar)
  • further studies in the module AK (intensive studies to gain expertise in one of the central linguistic fields)

computational linguistics

Computational linguistics, i.e. the theory and methodology of computer-aided language processing, constitutes a major part of the undergraduate study programme. Undergraduate students in computational linguistics study the following modules from their third term onwards:

  • advanced module C1, which comprises an introductory course on computational linguistics and a seminar on the methodology of computational linguistics
  • advanced module C2, which is an introductory course on the programming language PROLOG
  • advanced module C6 on the implementation of computational linguistics zur
  • advanced module C3 on language technology (applied computational linguistics)
  • advanced module C5 on specific matters

Information sciences

These two modules from the undergraduate study programme in information sciences serve to introduce students into the basics of programming.

  • basic module D1 software engineering and programming
  • basic module D2 practice in programming (Java programming)

The minor foreign language ("Kleine Fremdsprache")

This module serves to provide students with practice in a foreign language in which they have little knowledge or no knowledge at all. In this way, students usually acquire their third foreign language. They can choose from English, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Yiddish, Hebrew (Biblical and contemporary), Latin and Ancient Greek. Further language options are being developed. After prior consultation with the department, other languages can also be studied outside Heinrich Heine Universtity.

  • basic module  S4 und S5: language practice, a total of 8 hours a week, two final exams
  • advanced module S6 in the linguistics of the minor foreign language and/or additional language practice

Electives from different academic fields

The electives are courses that students attend alongside their studies and that benefit them. Pursuant to the regulation for undergraduate study programmes, the elective courses can be choosen from:

    • lectures offered within the framework of the "Studium Universale" devised by the Heinrich Heine University. If possible, students should attend courses from faculties other than the one they are enrolled with and be awarded a minimum of 4 credit points.
    • seminars offered by the faculty that serve to impart key skills and to prepare students for professional life.
    • study modules from study programmes other than the one students are graduating in, possibly from faculties other than the one they are enrolled with.
    • other seminars that serve to prepare students for aptitude tests for subsequent postgraduate study programmes.

      Abbreviations

AP = Abschlussprüfung = final exam

CP = Kreditpunkte = Credit Points

      P = Pflicht = compulsory courses

WP = Wahlpflicht = compulsory subject choice
