GENERAL LINGUISTICS

Version "C", which focuses on computational linguistics

This version of the undergraduate study programme in linguistics provides students with comprehensive knowledge of general linguistics, basic knowledge of information sciences and a foreign language as well as expertise in computational linguistics.

Computational linguistics

Within the framework of computational linguistics, students deal with issues and approaches on processing human language by means of computers and with related theoretical aspects. The two introductory lectures on information sciences serve to familiarize students with the basics of practical information science and software engineering.

The minor foreign language ("Kleine Fremdsprache")

The studies in the minor foreign language ("Kleine Fremdsprache") focus on a foreign language in which students have little knowledge or no knowledge at all. In this way, students usually acquire their third foreign language. They can choose from French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Yiddish, Hebrew, Latin and Ancient Greek. Further language options are being developed. After prior consultation with the department, other languages can also be studied outside Heinrich Heine Universtity.

Prospects

Graduates in the undergraduate study programme which focuses on computational linguistics ("Linguistik mit Schwerpunkt Computerlinguistik") are qualified to develope specific implementation tools in projects related to computational linguistics in scientific and industrial contexts based on detailled linguistic descriptions. Moreover, graduates have acquired a solid academic foundation, which enables them to pursue a Master's programme which focuses on compuational linguistics.
