GENERAL LINGUISTICS

Undergraduate study programme, linguistics as minor subject

The structure of the undergraduate study programme

The study programme ensures students acquire profound knowledge of all linguistic core disciplines, i.e. phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmactics. In a more advanced stage of the study programme, students can focus their studies on two of seven linguistic fields to gain expert knowledge. Besides the three core disciplines, students can chose from interdisciplinary fields such as historical linguistics, cognitive and neurolinguistics, computational linguistics and linguistic diversity.

Possible combinations

Undergraduate studies in linguistics as a minor subject can be combined with all existing and future major subjects offered for undergraduate students at the faculty of humanities. Especially English studies, German studies and Romance studies serve as ideal major subjects. These study programmes comprise linguistic studies to a far lesser extent than the study programme in linguistics does and specifically focus on the relevant language. As a result, the extent to which study-related content is repeated is negligeable. More to the point, linguistic studies as a minor subject serve to hone methodological skills that are required to deal with foreign languages.

Objectives

Linguistic studies as a minor subject in the undergraduate study programme serve to provide insights into methodological skills and fundamental knowledge relating to the description, analyses, diagnosis and technical processing of language. Students are thus qualified to enter a wide range of professions inside and outside the academic context. Especially following from a growing internationalisation, experts in such linguistic matters benefit from new professional opportunities.
