Structure and content of the study programme
The following summary aides orientation. The only legal foundations for the study programme, however, are the regulations on the study programme and on examinations.
Structure
The study programme consists of 7 modules, 6 of which are thematical modules (MS1, MS2, ML1, ML2, ML3, ML4) and 1 of which is a "team project" (MT). During the third and fourth term, students write a master's thesis.
Each module comprises lectures and seminars to the tune of 4 to 6 hours of class per week (= Semesterwochenstunden, SWS).
- Modules ML3 and ML4 of the postgraduate study programme enable students to focus on certain areas of their choice and thus specialize on particular linguistic fields.
- However, in order to ensure that students acquire broad linguistic knowledge, the lectures and seminars contained in the modules ML1 and ML2 may not constitute areas of specialisation.
- Please refer to the table below for an overview on modules, descriptions and the team project.
Abbreviations
SWS = Semesterwochenstunden= hours of class per week
AP = Abschlussprüfung= final exam
CP = Credit Points (Kreditpunkte)
P = Pflicht= obligatory

Academic year | Module | |||
Title of the module | Description | AP
1 | Sprachpraxis, foreign language practice | Advanced foreign language practice in English, German as a foreign language, French, Italian or Spanish. If English is chosen here, the module on language practice offered for students of the postgraduate study programme in English constitutes the module MS1. If a Romance language is chosen here, the module MS1 is identical to the language practice module for the first or second Romance language. | 1
1 | Einzelsprache: Linguistik, linguistics of one specific language (6 SWS, 15 CP) | 3 lectures or seminars on the linguistics of one specific language on offer: 2 advanced seminars / Master's seminars/ lectures as well as another Master's seminar on the linguistics of one specific language e.g. German, English, French, Italian or Spanish. | 1
1 | Kernbereiche der Linguistik, (4 SWS, 12 CP) | 2 lectures or seminars on linguistic core disciplines, unless they form the area of specialisation constituted by module ML3: 1 advanced seminar/ Master's seminar/ lecture as well as another Master's seminar on phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax or semantics and pragmatics | 1
1-2 | Interdisziplinäre Bereiche der Linguistik, interdisciplinary fields of linguistics (6 SWS, 15 CP) | 2 advanced modules/ Master's seminars/ lectures as well as another Master's seminar on areas of linguistic diversity, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, computational linguistics, historical linguistics, unless these areas form the specialisation constituted by module ML 3 | 1
1 | Spezialgebiet (1), specialisation 2 | 2 advanced modules/ Master's seminars/ lectures on either phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax, linguistic diversity, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, computational linguistics, language technologie or historical linguistics | 1
2 | Spezialgebiet (2), specialisation 2 | 2 Master's seminars, one of which must be a research-based seminar on the same area as the one dealt with in module ML3. Please note: students take the final exam by way of giving a presentation in a cross-modular colloquium. | 1
2 | Teamprojekt Tutorium, tutorial as a team project | The objective of the team project is for students to become familiar with teaching in an academic context and teach students themselves. Against the backdrop of the team project, a group of Master's students devise a concept for a tutorial they give on a seminar offered for undergraduate students of linguistics. This concept covers preparations for the class in question as well as corrections and discussions of homework for the course. Each student enrolled in the postgraduate study programme in linguistics has to offer a tutorial to the tune of 2 hours of class per week. As a team, the students will then discuss, evaluate and document the progress of their tutorials. Presenting orally and in writing these results forms part of the final exam for this module, which has to be taken in the following term one month after the beginning of lectures at the latest. | 1
2 | Master's thesis (24 CP) | The Master's thesis that students write serves to evidence their in-depth knowledge of linguistic matters and methodologies and their ability to deal with subject-related issues as well as present the results in line with scientific standards. The topic has to be sufficiently specific in view of the content and extent so that the Master's thesis can be dealt with during the allocated period of time. The thesis of about 24,000 words (about 80 pages) is to be written either in German or in English during the fourth term of the study programme and must be completed within no more than 6 months.
