GENERAL LINGUISTICS

The postgraduate study programme

Graduates of the postgraduate study programme are awarded the academic degree "Master of Arts" (M.A.), which is to replace the German degree "Magister" and associated study programmes, which are being outphased. The former unlike the latter complies with international standards. Applicants who intend to enrol in postgraduate study programmes are required to hold a Bachelor's degree (B.A.) or to document equivalent academic achievements. Further information on the requirements are outlined in the relevant regulations on postgraduate study programmes.

Graduates from postgraduate study programmes are trained scientist that are able to conduct research independently at universities, research institutes or industrial organisations. Further more, a good degree qualifies graduates for a PhD programme. Postgraduate study programmes are either taught or research-based. The postgraduate study programme in linguistics is a taught programme while the postgraduate study programme in information science and communication theory is research-based. As they are both structured study programmes, they combine different academic disciplines. By contrast, other postgraduate study programmes offered at the department for humanities (e.g. German, English or Romance studies) are study programmes with a single subject.

Combinatory study programmes that combine two subjects and that are offered for undergraduate students are not offered for postgraduate students at Heinrich Heine University.
