M. A. COMPARATIVE STUDIES IN ENGLISH AND AMERICAN LANGUAGE, LITERATURE, AND CULTURE
The newly accredited M.A. programme Comparative Literature of the English Department at Heinrich-Heine-University in Düsseldorf, approaches the field of English and American Studies by linking major expertise from the departments of Medieval English Studies, Modern English Literature, Linguistics, American Studies as well as Anglophone Literatures. Accompanied by specialiy designed courses in oral and written academic English, customized to the needs of students who are already well advanced in this area - this programme is designed to ensure the furthering of young researchers by providing a first-rate qualification (particularly in an international context) in- and outside of academia.
Particular fields of research are:
Historical and comparative analysis of language, text, literature (e.g. in terms of stylistic, generic, era-specific features) based on a corpus from the English-speaking world ranging from about 800 A.D. to the present day.
Global and intercultural communication within such conceptual frameworks as 'World Englishes', 'World Literature', 'Transatlantic Negotiations', 'Post-Colonialism' – and with regard to English as a lingua franca in culture, science, economics, law, etc.
Cross-media approaches to nonverbal and/or hybrid cultural phenomena (image, sound, dance, song, film, music video, graphic novel, the internet).
General functional theory of culture, language, text, and literature vis-à-vis particular contexts in intellectual, social, technological, and media history; or exemplified by domain-specific language formations; or regarding cultural conflicts in the realm of class, gender, and ethnicity.
International networks: our partnerships with academic institutions in the UK (Reading, Winchester, UCL London), Ireland (UCD), India, and the United States (Madison/Wisconsin, Davis/California) provide plenty opportunities to make contacts abroad.
Academic networks: actively involved in two graduate schools ('Age(ing): Cultural Concepts and Practical Realisations', 'Materiality and Production') and to various research projects at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, our Department offers graduate students an exciting academic environment.
