Our teaching and research are devoted to the exploration of American literary history, the history of ideas, and cultural history. The courses in our department focus on the major phases of literary, philosophical, and cultural development in America: The Age of Puritanism, the Enlightenment, the Early Republic, the American Renaissance, the Gilded Age, Modernism, as well as recent and contemporary literary and philosophical culture.

In addition to the core curriculum, the various interests and research projects of the faculty members enable us to pay attention to the writings of ethnic minorities, the specific intellectual and cultural creativity of women, and the varieties of political and religious movements.
Our curriculum also includes courses on cultural and artistic practices such as painting, photography, film, material culture, music, and architecture.
