This course is the second part of the Introduction to Medieval English Studies. Its basic objective is to give a deeper insight into the history of the English language and medieval English literature. You will learn how to describe and explain change phenomena on the phonological, morphological, lexical, and syntactical levels of grammar. Moreover, we will focus on specific topics of medieval English literature and culture in each unit.

After having attended the course you will be able to:

  • describe and explain selected change phenomena on all levels of grammar
  • outline the development of the standardization of English
  • relate historical events and cultural developments to medieval English literature
  • describe genres of medieval English literature and the corresponding texts and authors in greater detail
  • communicate in a correct and adequate way about the topics of the course
  • have a certain competence of using research facilities and methods of presentation

A workbook containing the texts and materials used in the seminar will be available in printed form at the beginning of the term. The course will also be accompanied by an online version:
