The seminar will give a survey of the history of English lexicography, i.e. the making of dictionaries and encyclopedias, from the 16th to the 20th century.

Four dictionaries will be discussed in greater detail:

1. Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language (available on CD-ROM)

2. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) (available on CD-ROM)

3. The Dictionary of Old English (DOE) (online licence in the ULB’s virtual library)

4. The Middle English Dictionary (MED) (online licence in the ULB’s virtual library)

All these dictionaries are available in printed and in electronic form in the University Library or the FB Anglistik.

Two units of this course will be concerned with the theory of lexicology, i.e. models of meaning, problems of analyzing meaning, the structure of the lexicon, etc.

Thus, the major objectives of this seminar are evident: we will need a broad survey of the tradition of English lexicography and at the same time some basic knowledge of lexicology as such in order to be able to understand historical and practical issues with regard to the selected four dictionaries.
